Chapter 6

When Chase rose at sunset and ventured out into the hall, he was disappointed not to find Dalton, or even a message from Dalton, waiting for him. Hunger shredded his gut, his appetite no doubt stimulated by the cavorting he’d done the night before. Reluctantly he made his way down to the bar to feed.

In the elevator, he avoided thinking back to the details of his encounter with Dalton. The sweet memories were tinged with bitterness now that things had ended badly, and he had no one but himself to blame. If only he’d stuck with the original plan of never revealing his true purpose at Anarchy! True, Dalton had promised to help him, whatever that meant, but Chase suspected that had been a way for him to ease out of the situation. He’d certainly fled the scene as quickly as he could and had made no effort to return.

In the bar, he found Jonas strutting back and forth across a small stage at one end of the barroom. Kurt was arranging a few props on a nearby table, including a medieval-style sword. Gerald and Byron stood nearby, talking to one another while Jonas ordered Kurt around.

“What’s going on?” Chase asked Izzo as he slid onto a vacant stool. Izzo placed a bottle of blood in front of him without being asked. Cautiously Chase opened it and let the scent tickle his nostrils. It didn’t seem as offensive today as it usually did. He didn’t have to think about tomato juice to keep his stomach calm.

“Jonas says he’s giving us all a treat—a recitation of the battle speech from Shakespeare’s Henry V.” Izzo sighed. “I would have preferred something romantic, but maybe Byron wouldn’t hear of it. Must be difficult for him, watching an entire room of vampires lust over Jonas.”

Chase raised his brows. “You think they’re a couple?” “They’re certainly trying to look like it.”

“That’s my point. It could all be for show.”

Before Izzo could answer, Byron wandered over and leaned

against the bar next to him. He raised his own bottle in a mock toast. “Greetings, Chase. You here for the performance?”

“Wouldn’t miss it,” Chase said.

“I guess you like all this intellectual stuff, then?”

“Yeah, I remember that speech from my Shakespeare class in

college. Good stuff.”

Byron snorted. “I went to college, you know. Didn’t read much

literature, though. We were into different stuff back then. It was the

sixties, after all.”

“I wasn’t born yet, but I’ve heard it was quite the party. Must have

been fun.”

“It was,” Izzo said wistfully.

“Was that when you changed?” Chase asked Byron, who nodded. “June 27, 1969 was the night of the Stonewall riot. Heard of it?

Beginning of the gay rights movement in New York City and my last

night as a human. Kind of ironic, isn’t it? Or maybe just

coincidental.”

“You’re kidding. What happened?”

“We were all crazy back then, hooking up wherever and whenever

we could. That night was no exception…only I picked the wrong guy.

Or the right one, depending how you look at it.”

“You don’t sound like you regret turning.
